Why does my Oculus Quest 2 keep turning itself on and off while charging?

Does your Oculus Quest 2 turn itself on and then off every time you charge it? Let’s find out the possible causes for this glitch and how to tackle it without a hitch.

Why does my Oculus Quest 2 turn on and off when plugged in?

An Oculus Quest 2 usually turns on and off repeatedly while charging because of a drained or failing battery, a software boot loop, reacting to a blocked proximity sensor, or waking up from sleep mode.

Other reasons can be:

  1. You have not completely powered off your Meta Quest 2.
  2. The Experimental features are corrupt on the headset.
  3. Something is in front of the sensor, triggering movement.
  4. The Meta Horizon app is connected to your Oculus while charging.
  5. A software bug is causing a glitch.
  6. The Elite strap is faulty.

How do I stop my Oculus Quest 2 from turning on and off by itself while charging?

To fix an Oculus Quest 2 that keeps turning on and off while charging, use the forced USB Update Mode to let the depleted battery charge without repeatedly booting up.

1. Turn off the Headset correctly

You might have just removed your Quest 2 from your head without completely shutting it down before charging. This can cause it to turn ON when you plug it in.

To prevent this, press the Power button and the Volume Down (minus) button at the same time until the menu appears, select Power Off, and wait for the headset screen to turn black. Now, plug in the charger and verify that it is not turning on by itself.

If this doesn’t work, this time, plug in the charger and then turn off the headset using the Power Off menu.

2. Check the power button

Make sure that nothing is pressing against the Power button while plugging in your Meta Quest 2. Otherwise, it may turn ON by itself, you may see a blinking red light on it, or the battery won’t hold a charge long enough.

3. Reset experimental features

Quite a few users who enabled the Experimental feature on their Oculus Quest 2 earlier were able to fix the problem by just resetting its settings. To do this:

  1. Open Quick Settings by pointing at the clock on the left side of your Meta Quest headset menu.
  2. Go to Experimental.
  3. Select Reset All to Default.
  4. Tap Restart (on the pop-up) for the changes to take effect.

Now, power off the headset, put it to charge, and see if it turns on!

4. Disconnect the headset from the Meta Quest app

You also need to make sure that when charging your Meta Quest 2, you don’t log into the app to browse games or something else. Doing so can automatically connect the headset to the app and make it turn on.

One way to check this is to open the Meta Horizon app, go to the Device section, and see the status, which should be Not Connected. If it shows otherwise, force-close the app or disconnect your Oculus Quest 2 and power it off completely again.

Hopefully, it won’t turn on when plugged in this time!

5. Switch off auto-update

Another way is to disable the auto-update option for the downloaded apps and games on your Oculus Quest 2. When enabled, the headset may try to automatically install the new versions when you put it to charge and turn it back ON by itself to complete the process.

To stop this from happening:

  1. Open the Meta Horizon app.
  2. Tap the Gear (Settings) icon and select your headset.
  3. Go to More Settings and choose Advanced Settings.
  4. Toggle off Update Software Automatically.

CAUTION: After turning off the auto-update option on your Oculus 2, you’ll have to update apps and games manually each time.

6. Disable auto-wake

Your Meta Quest 2 might also switch on while charging because the auto-wake feature is enabled.

The fix is to go to the power settings in the headset menu and turn off the feature that automatically wakes it when movement or proximity is detected.

7. Cover proximity sensor

You possibly have something in front of the Quest 2 sensor that is causing it to behave that way.

So, ensure nothing rests inside the headset or blocks the lenses. Also, cover the proximity sensor with tape to block the signals when you set it down to charge.

While at it, take a dry microfiber cloth and wipe the area right between the two lenses inside the headset where the proximity sensor is located.

8. Unplug Elite Strap

The Elite Strap with a built-in battery is an additional accessory for the Oculus Quest 2. It distributes the weight of the headset more evenly across your head.

However, it may cause your Meta Quest 2 to keep turning ON every 5-10 seconds while charging.

In such a case, simply remove it before you plug in your gadget.

If you are worried about wearing out the ports on the headset, use magnetic USB adapters to connect or disconnect the strap with your Oculus Quest 2.

9. Try a force charge

When the battery is completely dead, the headset tries to boot up when it receives power, but it lacks enough stored energy to stay on, which results in an endless on-and-off sequence.

In this case, you can do a force-charge your Oculus 2. To do this:

  1. Connect the charging cable to the headset.
  2. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down (-) buttons at the same time.
  3. Wait for the USB Update Mode screen to appear, which uses minimal power and lets the battery charge safely.
  4. Leave it connected for 1 to 2 hours, then boot your Quest 2 normally.

10. Reset your Meta Quest 2

If the problem occurred right after a software update, reset your headset to factory settings by doing the following steps:

  1. Turn off your Quest 2.
  2. Press & hold the Power and the Volume Down (Minus) button to access the boot screen.
  3. Use the volume buttons to go to the Factory Reset option and select it.
  4. After that, set up your headset again, put it to charge, and verify the fix.

TIP: If the problem comes back, your best bet is to wait for another update that can potentially fix this bug.

11. Replace your Headset

If all else fails, it is possible that your Oculus/Meta Quest 2 headset is physically damaged. So contact Oculus support or the retailer to get a replacement if it is still under the warranty period.

Is it safe to play Oculus Quest 2 while charging?

Yes, you can use your Meta Quest 2 while it is charging, but there are important safety and battery health factors to keep in mind.

The Oculus 2 has a built-in fan cooling system, which prevents it from dangerously overheating during simultaneous use and charging.

However, Meta (formerly Oculus) officially advises against it. This is because a lithium-ion battery at the same time creates extra heat, which can degrade its life faster over time. If the headset feels excessively hot to the touch, unplug it and let it power down to cool off.

Also, moving around with a plugged-in cable can put physical stress on the USB-C port and potentially damage the connector. To avoid this, connect an external power bank or a long wall charger, which lets you play past the usual two-hour battery limit.
