Why is my Oculus Go stuck on a loading screen with three dots, and it won’t get out?

Although Meta has discontinued Oculus Go and its support, some users still own it because it is very cheap. However, they often complain that the headset is stuck on the loading screen with three loading dots after they turn it on and fail to get to the Home menu.

The same happens when they want to update it. If you are one of those, this problem can leave you staring at a black screen with no way to use your gadget. Below, you’ll find the possible reasons for this issue and several ways to fix it with step-by-step instructions.

Why is my Oculus Go just showing 3 dots?

Your Oculus Go is stuck on the three loading dots because it is failing to load the main menu, usually due to a lost Wi-Fi connection, a pending update, or outdated terms and conditions that need approval in the app.

My Oculus Go has three white dots on it. How can I fix them?

To fix an Oculus Go stuck on the three white dots loading screen, you need to restart the headset, reconnect it to Wi-Fi, re-pair it to your phone’s companion app, or perform a factory reset if the software is corrupted.

1. Force a hard reboot

A temporary software glitch may cause your Oculus Go to freeze and stay on the three-dot loading screen. A quick restart can often get the headset working again. To do this, hold the Power button for about 10-15 seconds until it turns off, and then press it again to switch it back on.

Note: Make sure the battery is charged above 35% before turning on your Oculus Go.

2. Avoid overheating the headset

Using your Oculus Go in a hot room can cause it to overheat. This may lead to different problems, including getting stuck on the loading dots loading after you restart it.

The simple fix is just to use it in a cooler room with a fan or air conditioner running to prevent it from getting too hot.

3. Switch the Wi-Fi band

Your Oculus Go may have trouble getting past the loading screen when your internet connection is using the wrong network band.

For this, open your router’s web app in a browser, go to the Wi-Fi settings, and if 2.5GHz is selected, choose 5GHz.

After changing the Wi-Fi band, restart your headset and check if this works out.

4. Use the mobile app

You can also try pairing your Oculus Go with its companion app on your phone to get it out of the stuck three loading dots.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Turn on your Oculus Go.
  2. Install the Meta Horizon mobile app on your Android or iPhone and sign in.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on both your headset and smartphone.
  4. Connect your phone and Oculus Go to the same Wi-Fi network with internet access.
  5. Start setting up your profile in the app. When prompted to pair, select your Oculus Go, and this may get it out of the loading loop.

5. Reconnect Wi-Fi in the app

Sometimes, your Oculus Go just needs to reconnect to Wi-Fi on your phone to fix this glitch.

  1. Open the Meta Horizon app.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth, go to Devices, and choose your Oculus Go.
  3. Even if you see Connected, open up Wi-Fi Settings in the app and select your network again.
  4. This often nudges your Oculus Go enough to bypass the loading screen and lands you straight on the main menu.

6. Update via the Meta Horizon app

The three white loading dots often appear when the Oculus Go is trying to download an update or cannot connect to your profile/internet.

  1. Open the app on your phone and ensure your account is logged in.
  2. Turn on your Oculus Go and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone for pairing.
  3. Go to Settings in the app, select your headset, and navigate to Wi-Fi settings to connect the device to a working internet network.
  4. Leave the headset powered on and charging near your router for a while to let any background updates finish.

7. Check your profile name

If you see a red circle around your profile name in the Oculus app on your iPhone, simply tap it so it turns green. This can also fix the endless/infinite three-dot loading screen.

8. Sign in after changing your password

You might have changed your Meta or Facebook password, but the problem is that your Go won’t tell you, and you’ll just get stuck on the loading screen forever. The fix here is to sign out of the mobile app, log back in, and then re-pair the headset to refresh the security tokens.

9. Cast to Oculus Go

This problem can also manifest after you merge your Oculus account with a Meta account on their web setup page. The same happens when you change the username there as well.

In this case, you can try casting from the app to your Oculus Go:

  1. Connect your phone and Oculus Go to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the Oculus app on your phone and sign in using your Meta account credentials.
  3. Tap Cast, select your Oculus Go headset, and select Start.
  4. Go to the Apps section, choose an app, and tap Open.
  5. Wait for it to load on the headset. This may help the Oculus Go get past the three white dots on the screen.
  6. Restart your device and verify the fix.

10. Accept pending terms

Another hack to get rid of the 3 white loading dots on your headset is to just log in to the app and accept any new terms there. This sounds simple but has worked for many users.

11. Clean the proximity sensor

Dust, sweat, or a blocked sensor can trick the device into thinking you are not wearing it, and this might be the reason you can’t reach the Home menu.

Try wiping the small sensor located between the lenses on your Oculus Go, restart it, and see if this works.

12. Factory reset your Oculus Go

The last resort is to just factory reset your Oculus Go. Here’s how:

  1. Turn it off completely by pressing and holding the power button until the shutdown menu appears, then select Power Off.
  2. Press and hold both the Power and the Volume Down (-) buttons at the same time.
  3. Wait until the boot menu screen loads inside your headset, then let go of the buttons.
  4. Use the Volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press Power to choose this option.
  5. Highlight Yes and press Power again to confirm.
  6. Now your Oculus Go will restart and get past the 3 dots.

Do note that this factory reset can lead to a setup trap.

The Meta Horizon mobile app may fail during the health and safety video playback, which is required to finish the process, leaving the device stuck on the loading screen.

If you encounter this, search for and install an older Android APK version (v193 or earlier) to complete the setup because it allows you to skip that video that results in the stuck loading screen.

My Oculus Go is stuck on the update screen. What can I do?

You can fix an Oculus Go stuck on the update or setup screen by forcing a hard reboot or performing a factory reset via the boot menu.

If the force restart fails to work, a network problem may have caused your headset to install an incomplete or corrupted software update.

In this case, your Oculus Go may get stuck on the update screen with the same three loading dots and stop you from reaching the main menu on the screen.

To resolve this, you can try removing the problematic update and installing a fresh one manually. Before you begin, move your headset closer to the router to get a stronger Wi-Fi signal, and then:

  1. Turn off the headset.
  2. Press and hold Power and Volume for a few seconds.
  3. Release both buttons when the Oculus logo appears on the display, and this will open USB Update Mode.
  4. Use the Volume button to select Factory Reset, then press Power to choose it.
  5. Confirm the reset and wait for the process to finish to automatically return to the USB Update Boot menu.
  6. Choose Boot Device.

Once that is done, you can install the latest updates:

  1. Open the Meta Horizon app on your phone and tap Settings at the bottom.
  2. Select your Oculus Go and navigate to More Settings > About > Oculus Go version.
  3. Tap Update and wait while your headset downloads and installs the latest files.
  4. Do a restart and check whether your Oculus Go can now get past the stuck update screen.
